La Libertad is a landlocked municipality in the coastal province of Zamboanga del Norte.

The municipality has a land area of 69.51 square kilometers or 26.84 square miles which constitutes 0.95% of Zamboanga del Norte’s total area. Its population as determined by the 2015 Census was 8,406. This represented 0.83% of the total population of Zamboanga del Norte province, or 0.23% of the overall population of the Zamboanga Peninsula region. Based on these figures, the population density is computed at 121 inhabitants per square kilometer or 313 inhabitants per square mile.

Creation into Municipality

By virtue of Republic Act No. 2192, the barrios of La Libertad, La Victoria, La Union, El Paraiso, New Carcar, Mauswagon, Singaran and Mercedes and the sitios of New Bataan and Tuayon in the Municipality of Rizal, Province of Zamboanga del Norte, are separated from said municipality, and are constituted into a distinct and independent municipality to be known as the Municipality of La Libertad, same province, with the seat of government at the present site of the barrio of La Libertad.

Location

The municipal center of La Libertad is situated at approximately 8° 28′ North, 123° 32′ East, in the island of Mindanao. Elevation at these coordinates is estimated at 172.2 meters or 564.7 feet above mean sea level.
